What if Dr. Seuss did Technical Writing?

I saw this great 'poem' on our computer system supports' door today:

I would not, could not use my mouse
To connect to networks from my house!
It always says I need more RAM
I do not like it, Sam I Am!

Here's an easy game to play.
Here's an easy thing to say:

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
And the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
And the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
Then the socket packet pocket has an error to report!

If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash,
And the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash,
And your data is corrupted 'cause the index doesn't hash,
Then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash!

You can't say this?
What a shame sir!
We'll find you
Another game sir.

If the label on the cable on the table at your house,
Says the network is connected to the button on your mouse,
But your packets want to tunnel on another protocol,
That's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall,

And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss,
So your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse,
Then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang,
'Cause as sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang!

When the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy on the disk,
And the microcode instructions cause unnecessary RISC,
Then you have to flash your memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM.
Quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your Mom!

PK got his paper into ICCV!! Congratulations!

Peter, my supervisor came in yesterday to get inputs for a preliminary floor plan of room 2.09 because there will be some reallocation of desks to group students with similar research interests in close vicinity.
But the big news was his work on shapelets is accepted as oral presentation in the most prestigeous computer vision conference in the world - IEEE International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV).
The acceptance rate for oral presentations is of the order of a few percent (for 2005 there were 1200 submissions, of which 245 were accepted and 45 of those were for oral presentation).

I feel so proud to be one of his students, and he's such a nice supervisor! Yeah!!

So he'll be flying to Beijing, China in October. Cool!!

www.DurianSS2.com
As the name suggested, it's a website about a Durian stall in SS2. Those living around KL may know where it is...
Include a photo here of the one I usually eat, in case you don't know what Durian looks like.

Yong Peng (my Hometown) under Google Map

Crime Scene in Jim's cubicle. Check it out in G.11 if you're in CSSE. :D

Student Cafe on Hampden Road near UWA. It's opened about a year ago and I love it! The Malaysian owner is very friendly and the food is nice and cheap.
Nowhere else in Perth can you find $3.50 lunch!! Well, please let me know if you find another one close by. :)

Nasi Lemak @ Student Cafe - my favourite lunch of choice. Well, it's not exactly nasi lemak, more like curry chicken with rice + bonus fish, egg and onion. Taste good and Super $3.50 value.

The image of kids used to freak me out before I figure out which command brought it out!! Imagine coding late at night alone in the lab, and when the code is executed, suddenly an image of a kid poped up from nowhere!!! Took me awhile to figure out the stupid easter egg then!

Kes is learnig Mandarin

Kes is learning Mandarin now. She is going to China net month for a conference in WuHan. And she knows that Chinese cannot tell that she's from thailand and cannot understand Mandarin. Well, Kes parent are both Chinese Thai, so she looks very Chinese to me. :P

But she's doing very very well. She got a little "Just enough Chinese" book and i help her a bit on the pronounciation. I found out that Thai is very tonal and has 5 tones. So it's actually a re-map of Thai 5-tone into Mandarin 4-tone. Within a day, she can read stuffs from the little book and I understand her. :D

It's a lot of fun teaching her the pronounciation structure of Mandarin and realise some part of it that I never questioned... :)

For more info, here's where she live, she got some nice photo shots also: Home page of Kesaraporn Techapichetvanich (Kes).

Educational Methodology of Landmark Forum

Just found out on Landmarkeducation website about their Educational Methodology: "Standard educational methods often leave you having to remember the concepts you were taught or trying to figure out how to apply them. Landmark's method leaves you applying what you learned naturally and without effort.

Similar to riding a bicycle, in Landmark's programs you learn by direct personal discovery - a moment occurs when a new ability is yours. You become confident in what you've learned, and the new ability is yours forever.

The Landmark method is more like coaching than teaching, more like conversation than lecture. While conventional education methods focus on content (adding facts, rules, or skills to our knowledge), the Landmark method deals with context - the framework(s) in which content can exist.

Whenever we're limited in life, there is something - a context or framework - that we are blind to and that is holding that limitation in place. Landmark's technology allows you to create breakthroughs in a two-step process in which you:

• Uncover and examine the blind spots or context holding you back in your life.
• Find out where your current context originated and address it for what it really is.

Having completed these two steps, a new realm of possibility is available to you. The constraints from the past disappear. Your view of life, your thoughts, your feelings, and your actions, change - and the change is immediate, dramatic, and without effort. It is a breakthrough."

Resolution techniques to Conflicts between loved ones

A long chat with a friend tonight about conflicts between loved ones crystallized some of my thoughts:

1. When something happened, we can only GUESS what it means or what the intention is behind. We often believe this GUESS to be true and accuse people with it. But a same act can come from very different intentions! How can we be sure which one it is? If we cannot be sure, how can we hold on to our GUESS so strongly that all explanations to the real intention cannot be heard?

> Be humble about the GUESS of people's intention based upon the surface "what happened". Shouldn't the person know better than you what his/her intention behind his/her own action is?

2. No one can upset/provoke us, we generate the feelings ourselves. When we are emotionally unstable, we should figure out why ourselves and communicate that with our loved ones, rather than expecting them to figure out the relationship between 'what they did' and 'our emotional swing'. A lot of time, this relationship is not clear to others, primarily because we GUESS wrongly their intention behind, which they have no idea of.

The Freedom of Choice by Dr Tom Chalko

A friend of mine asked me to help her buy a bioresonant T-shirt. And from the website, I come across this extremely interesting book. I've been reading it this couple of days. It's only 128 pages, clear language, very easy to read, and yet inspiring.
It's well written with good logics, a lot of alarming truth and insights. You can get a free ebook from the website, well worth a read!

The Freedom of Choice by Dr Tom Chalko: "For the first time in the history of humanity on Earth The Purpose of existence of the entire Universe has been expressed and proven explicitly in writing for everyone to understand. Incidentally, it coincides with the purpose of your OWN existence... Are you ready?"

"The Freedom of Choice addresses 'the purpose of existence' - the most fundamental question, that intrigues humanity on Earth from time immemorial. Dr Chalko explains the purpose of human existence in the widest possible context – the Purpose of the entire Universe."
